Mattie Kaye, was back in a Kendal team after a few seasons away, but he played in the centre with Chris Park playing scrum half, in the only position behind the pack he hasn’t started for the First XV. On this performance you wonder why, as he had a very good game there.
Mark Carruthers, Dane Blenkharn and Joe Fiddler, who all have First team experience also featured, but a lot of the better known names were missing.
After an even opening, Kendal took the lead after eight minutes with a try on the wing, set up by Anthony Gage. 5v0
Vale almost immediately had their first score with a penalty, 5v3, then took the lead with a try 5v8
A Chris Park penalty drew the teams level. 8v8, but Vale added two tries, one converted before half time for an 8v20 lead.
The one area Kendal had the better of was the lineout, where veteran Windermere hooker Dan Harrison and Dane Blenkharn often combined well to secure ball, whilst Vale’s more obvious lineout forwards regularly struggled to take their ball.
Kendal were back in the game for a short time early in the second half with a try from Anthony Gage, set up by a break from deep in his twenty two from Dane Blenkharn, and when Gage took the ball near halfway he had no support, but got to the line before being tackled, and the try was awarded. Chris Park added the conversion 15v20.
Vale pulled away with three tries one converted for a 15v39 lead with ten minutes to play, before Kendal centre Josh Waters crashed over for a try converted by Chris Park 22v39
Vale added a further two converted tries for a 22v53 win.
